Concept: What was the big idea?

St. Michael’s Church School has entered the Christmas window display competition with a delightful and magical theme: a snowy, festive village alive with the spirit of Christmas! Drawing inspiration from beloved holiday stories like Whoville and traditional winter scenes, the display features whimsical Gingerbread characters, all joyfully celebrating the season. The village is alive with energy, from carolers to ice skaters, creating a warm, inviting atmosphere that brings the magic of Christmas to life.

Process: How did they do it?

A team effort, with students from Years 4–8 working together over several months, made this vision a reality. No single piece was created by just one child; instead, the village’s houses, trees, and Gingerbread characters were collaboratively crafted. Each student contributed their unique touch to the project, fostering a sense of teamwork and creativity. The display also includes a special tribute to inclusivity, with a Deaf Gingerbread character sporting cochlear implants—a reflection of the school’s diverse community.

Result: What does it look like?

The finished display is nothing short of enchanting. The snowy village scene is set against a painted winter backdrop by Art Teacher Bec Hitchcock, adding depth and magic to the display. Among the most eye-catching features is a turning ice rink, where the Gingerbread characters can be seen skating and celebrating. The inclusion of the Deaf Gingerbread character adds a heartwarming and meaningful layer to the display, perfectly capturing the school’s spirit of inclusivity, creativity, and holiday cheer.
